Hopedale duplex fire causes $100K in damage

An electrical fire caused $100,000 in damage to a two-family home on Bancroft Park on Tuesday evening.

Fire Chief Thomas Daige said firefighters responded to the two-unit home at 20-22 Bancroft Park around 6 p.m.

Daige said the fire started at 22 Bancroft Park, when residents were home. No one was home at 20 Bancroft Park.

The fire was caused by an electrical problem, Daige said, and resulted in about $100,000 in damage, the majority of which occurred at 22 Bancroft Park. The other unit sustained some water and smoke damage, he said.

“Both sides were not inhabitable, so the residents went to neighbors’ and relatives’ houses that night,” Daige said. “The house was turned over that night to the owner, who was going to do the necessary cleanup. But the 22 side won’t be livable for a while.”

A firefighter was taken to the hospital with a laceration to his hand, Daige said.

Firefighters from Hopedale, Milford, Mendon, and Upton also responded.
